Secure Certificates (SSL)

Shared & Dedicated Secure Certificates (SSL)

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a globalised standard security technology developed by Netscape in 1994. An SSL certificate creates an secure and encrypted link between a web server and a web browser client to ensure that all data transmitted remains private and secure.

Do I Need SSL?

A secure certificate will verify to your users that you can:

  • Provide assurance that their data cannot be tampered with or forged
  • Sensitive data (eg: credit card details) are transmitted securely

There are many other examples and uses for a secure certificate, but the above examples are the primary reasons for choose to use an SSL Certificate.

Shared or Dedicated Certificates

Shared Certificates

A shared certificate is a server wide certificate that is used by many of our clients. You will be provided a unique secure folder to upload your content too, however you will have to redirect your traffic to our secure area. This means your domain name will no longer appear as the primary domain, and you should take this into consideration if your clients are wary of change.

You will be provided with a secure sub-domain for example: https://yourdomain.greenisp.net.au.

Dedicated Certificates

Dedicated certificates are the most common form of certificates. They allow you to maintain total control and the appearance of your secure area. You will not be required to re-direct traffic away from your site, and you would maintain your secure data in the same manner as your 'insecure' data. For example you could provide your users with a secure site with a URL of http://secure.yourdomain.com.au.

Dedicated certificates also require that your website has a dedicated/static IP address associated with it in order for the certificate to function correctly.
